Frequently Asked Questions:
What can I do if I sign up for the Read Only Portal?
You will have limited access to view your health record without the ability to interact online with the office, nurse, or physician.
What can I do if I sign up for the Interactive Portal?
Our Interacive Patient Portal will give you the ability to communicate with our staff via the web, at your convenience. For the additional fee, you access features that enable you to communicate through e-mail with our office, your Physician and more, through the Patient Portal.
Carolina Internal Medicine allows you to communicate with us by using your computer about things such as scheduling office visits, asking questions about billing, sending medical information you got somewhere else (for example, if you got a flu shot), and even talking with your physician.
What will this cost?
The Read Only Portal is available at no charge, and the Interactive Portal is available for an annual fee of $60.
Why should you try email?
Using email allows you to communicate with your clinician’s office at a time that is good for you, without having to leave your home.
Will this be safe and private?
Privacy is a big concern for email communications. Carolina Internal Medicine’s patient portal uses secure communication methods so only you can read the email from us and your physician knows you are the person that is writing to him/her. You will create a username and password that will allow only you to access your portal. Your email communication will be safe and secure. As with any note your physician writes, a copy of your emails will be stored in your chart.
How soon will I hear back?
Our office will try to respond to email messages quickly. In most cases, emails sent after regular office hours will be answered by the end of the following business day, and emails sent in the morning will be answered by close of the same day. If you have a concern that needs to be addressed urgently, it is best to call the office.
How will my doctor remember what we’ve talked about?
Your physician will keep a copy of your email in your chart, just the same as they keep a note when you see them in the office for a visit.
What if I need a prescription?
Your physician will call in/fax/electronically send your prescription directly to the pharmacy of your choice.
When should I not use email?
Do not use email to contact the office if you think you are having an emergency. Call 911 instead. Examples of an emergency might include:
- Severe chest pain
- Great difficulty breathing
- A lot of bleeding
- A feeling that you might “pass out”
How do I view my lab results in the Patient Portal?
If you hover over the bar that says “Low, Normal, High” beside your result, a pop up will appear with the reference ranges for each result.
To view a possible comment from your physician regarding an abnormal lab result, click on the icon to the right of the result. (Note: the physician will only comment when he/she feels further clarification is needed.)
